On Saturday 20th June, in the glorious setting of St Giles Church, Wrexham, The Vale of Clwyd Singers will be singing choral music featured on both the big and small screens.

Modern compositions of film music are increasingly popular as a genre – but this fabulous summer evening concert features choral music that many know and love, but may not have realised feature in soundtracks! The choir will be performing works from Babe (Fauré – Cantique de Jean Racine), Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Mancini’s Moon River) , The Madness of King George (Handel’s Zadok the Priest) Minority Report (Bach’s Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring) Batman (excerpts from Fauré’s Requiem), Bridget Jones’s Diary (excerpts from Handel’s Messiah), The Florida Project (excerpts from Vivaldi’s Gloria) –and others.

The doors will be open from 6.30pm to enjoy a glass of bubbly and canapés (included in the ticket price). The music begins at 7.15pm, with refreshments available in the interval. St Giles church sits on a site that has seen continuous Christian worship for at least 800 years. The main body of the church as it stands now was built towards the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th centuries. It is widely thought to be among the greatest of the medieval buildings still standing in North Wales.

The Vale of Clwyd Singers have been part of the North Wales music scene since 2011. At its inception, their founder, Professor Robert Sells, brought musically-minded friends together to sing carols and madrigals in, and around, Denbigh. The Vale of Clwyd Singers draws on professional and trained-amateur voices from North Wales, Chester, Liverpool and the Wirral. On Robert’s retirement, Adrian Griffiths was appointed to direct the choir. He has been a member of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir for 25 years (frequently as a soloist) and, for 20 years was a Lay Clerk at Liverpool Cathedral. He frequently rehearsed and conducted the Cathedral Choir and Directed the Upper Voices Evensongs.

Singing mainly “a capella”, Vale of Clwyd Singers have performed works encompassing a wide variety of classical, baroque and contemporary works, including major compositions by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Fauré, Britten, Martin, and Vaughan Williams. Together with an ever-expanding catalogue of anthems, madrigals, songs, spirituals, folksongs, and rounds, the repertoire includes compositions that are sacred, profane and everything in-between! The choir also performs alongside chamber orchestras, such as Handel’s Dixit Dominus and Messiah. Previous engagements include the North Wales International Music Festival, Conwy Festival, MalFest in Cheshire, the Brandenburg Choral Festival in London and Neston Music Festival. As well as programming its own concerts, and perform by request for charitable fund-raising, corporate, public and private events.
