Baptism is one of life’s most joyful milestones, a moment of welcome, hope, and belonging. At St Giles’, we are delighted to share in this celebration, welcoming children and adults alike as they begin their journey of faith. Whether you’re exploring baptism for a new arrival, an older child, or for yourself, we’re here to guide you and support you every step of the way. It’s a celebration of God’s love and a public declaration of your desire (or your child’s) to walk in that love. Every baptism is deeply personal, and we will work with you to make the service meaningful, memorable, and full of joy.

 

To be baptised is to be named and claimed as part of something bigger, a family of faith stretching across time and place.

 

Things to know before you book

Who can be baptised

We welcome all people of all ages to baptism, from babies and children to teenagers and adults. Baptism marks the beginning of the journey of faith in which promises and undertakings made by the candidates, or parents and godparents, imply that they take seriously the promises being made.

Choosing godparents

When arranging a baptism for a child, you’ll be asked to choose godparents, trusted people who will support and encourage them in their faith as they grow. Godparents are required themselves be baptised, and ideally confirmed church members. Adults being baptised often choose a sponsor instead, someone to walk alongside them on their faith journey.

The baptism service

A baptism at St Giles usually takes place as a separate service at 1300 on a Sunday. During the service, water will be poured on the candidate’s head as a sign of new life and cleansing. You’ll also make (or affirm) promises about faith and commitment; promises we will help you understand and prepare for in advance.

  • You (or your child) live in the parish or have a connection with St Giles’.
  • You’ve spoken with us about the meaning of baptism and what the promises involve.
  • Godparents or sponsors have been chosen and are baptised Christians.
  • You’re happy with the proposed date and format of the service.
  • You have collected, filled in, and returned the baptism form to the office
  • You’ve met with a member of the clergy to prepare for the day.
