Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play one of the world’s most magnificent musical instruments?

The St Giles’ Organ Scholarship offers an exciting opportunity for a talented young pianist to begin that journey. Designed for aspiring musicians under the age of 19, this two-year scholarship provides expert tuition, practical experience and individual mentoring in the inspiring setting of St Giles’ Church, Wrexham.

Whether your ambition is to study music at college or university, to develop your keyboard skills to a new level, or simply to explore the remarkable world of the pipe organ, this scholarship offers a unique opportunity to learn from experienced church musicians while becoming part of the musical life of one of Wales’ most significant parish churches.

A Unique Musical Opportunity

The pipe organ has often been described as “the King of Instruments”, capable of producing an extraordinary range of sounds and colours unlike any other instrument.

As an Organ Scholar, you will:

  • Receive weekly one-to-one lessons with our Director of Music.
  • Learn the techniques and skills required to play the pipe organ.
  • Develop your musicianship through practical coaching and mentoring.
  • Observe and gradually participate in the musical life of St Giles’ on Sunday mornings.
  • Gain valuable experience that will strengthen future applications for college, university or conservatoire study.

Importantly, no previous experience of playing the organ is required. If you already play the piano to a grade 5 standard, we will help you make the transition.

Who Can Apply?

Applications are welcomed from young musicians who:

  • Are under 19 years of age.
  • Have are working at least to Grade 5 standard on the piano.
  • Are able to attend weekly lessons in Wrexham and participate on Sunday mornings.
  • Are enthusiastic about developing their musical abilities and willing to commit to the programme.

Applicants should be based locally enough to make regular attendance practical.

1. A 250-word written response

Answer the following question:

“How would the Organ Scholarship benefit you?”

We’re interested not only in your musical achievements, but also your enthusiasm, aspirations and willingness to learn.

The Audition Process

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an audition (date to be confirmed).

The audition will include:

  • Performing a prepared piece on the piano
  • A sight-reading test
  • An aural test

This is intended to be an encouraging and supportive process, allowing us to understand your current musical ability and your potential to flourish as an Organ Scholar.
