This October, St Giles’ Church is delighted to welcome The Longest Yarn 2: Britain at War to the heart of Wrexham.

Created through thousands upon thousands of hours of knitting and crochet, this remarkable exhibition tells the story of Britain during the Second World War through 80 extraordinary, hand-crafted scenes.

From the outbreak of war in September 1939 to the celebrations of VE Day in May 1945, familiar moments of history and the experiences of ordinary people are brought vividly to life in yarn.

Whether you come for the history, the craftsmanship, family memories, or simply to see something quite unlike anything you have seen before, The Longest Yarn 2 is an exhibition not to be missed.

What will I see?

The exhibition takes visitors on a journey through six years that changed Britain.

Across its 80 knitted and crocheted scenes you will encounter stories of evacuation, rationing, the Blitz, the Home Guard, the Women’s Land Army, D-Day and VE Day, alongside the everyday experiences of those who lived, worked, waited and hoped through the war years.

Look closely. The extraordinary detail is part of the experience.

Tiny household objects, clothing, buildings, vehicles and individual characters have all been painstakingly recreated in yarn. Behind them are hundreds of makers who have used their skill and creativity to help tell these stories to a new generation.

This is not simply an exhibition about war. It is about people: their courage and ingenuity, their separation and loss, their humour and resilience, and ultimately their hope for peace.

There is no need to book for individual visitors. Simply come along during our opening hours and our team will be delighted to welcome you.

Please note that the exhibition is not open on Sundays and we have a Mid Week Eucharist on a Thursday at 11:00.

Allow plenty of time for your visit. There is a great deal to discover, and many visitors find themselves returning to individual scenes to spot details they missed the first time.

Visiting St Giles’

The Longest Yarn is being displayed within the magnificent surroundings of St Giles’ Church, one of the great historic churches of Wales and a landmark at the heart of Wrexham.

While you are here, we hope you will also take some time to explore the church itself, a place of worship, history, memory and prayer which has stood at the heart of this community for generations.

St Giles’ remains a living and working church throughout the exhibition, and our regular pattern of worship continues as usual.

Everyone is welcome.
